Devil in Disguise – Lisa Kleypas

I was concerned going into Devil in Disguise because it’s been two years since I read the first six books in the series. A lot of Victorian romance tends to blend, but I picked up the storyline from the previous books in the first chapter. The series was distinct in my mind, and I could recall how the family relations fit together. I’m impressed that the books stood out so much in my mind.

Devil in Disguise follows Lady Merritt Sterling, an independently wealthy widow. Sparks fly when she’s introduced to whiskey distiller Keir MacRae. She’s a Lady. He’s a rough tradesman. When a dangerous secret wreaks havoc on their lives, Lady Merritt knows she can’t let him escape. The Ravenel family steps up to ensure everyone is kept safe and hunt down the menace.

I’m not going to have much to say about Devil in Disguise. It was fun and easy to read. All the characters are perfect and adorable. There is no angst or lack of communication. Some of Keir’s lines were deeply romantic. The family has so much sentimental love the book may as well be sticky. All the problems in the story are external to the family; they work together as a team. I love it when fully grown adults get a windfall or abrupt rise in rank. It’s one of my favourite devices.

I just realized that I read The Ravenels out of sequence. I should have started with the Wallflowers series. It seemed Sebastian and Evie were familiar, but that must be from the six books of the Ravenel series. Adding them to my TBR right now.

I listened to a Devil in Disguise via Libby. Mary Jane Wells was an excellent narrator who did a good job with the Scots accent. Her female characters were distinct, and none of them were insipid.
