House of Sky and Breath – Sarah J. Maas | Book Review

Crescent City #2

Whirlwind. This whole series is a whirlwind. I read book two the same weekend I read book one, literally only stopping to eat and sleep. I was totally wrapped up in it. Fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping the whole time.

It just keeps escalating. The first book moved through one or two levels, but this book moved through six. Bryce obviously doesn’t have imposter syndrome because she jumps into everything based on her decisions and judgment. While there are group discussions, the motivations of so many characters are unknown, and no one is fully transparent. Bryce going off and doing something without consulting anyone, assuming it will work out in her favor, is a recurring pattern. Scared the crap out of me and also made it seem like she was reeling from one problem to the next like a pinball.

Since the story moves so quickly, a lot of nuance and depth gets lost. I wish the plot moved slower so I could build a better rapport with the characters and become more emotionally invested. The cast of characters widens in this book, but I don’t get to know many of them well. Maybe that’s coming in book three?

I really leaned on how quickly the plot moved, but it didn’t stop me from immensely enjoying this book, and I cannot wait for book 3.
