Murder List – Julie Garwood | Book Review

Renard-Buchanan Book 4

Ah, a lovely 2000s romance/mystery. Not everyone has a cellphone or the Internet and the phones definitely aren’t smart. Those halcyon days. No morally grey characters, the good guys win at the end.

Though, reading romance written in the 90s/00s does make me a little crazy sometimes. The gender roles are pretty rigid and even the strong, smart, rich leading lady can’t keep her emotions in check. Murder List is far from the worst offender and keeps it pretty balanced for the time.

This is a heartwarming cozy mystery with a twisted killer. There’s no particular drama between the leading characters and it’s a sizzling slow burn, wholesome romance. Alec supports and protects Regan while she blossoms and stands up to her family.

I wasn’t sure how they were going to end up catching the killer and Garwood did a great job teasing it out. Alec worked his connections, finding out the deeper, hidden truths.

Pretty cute, pretty straightforward, you get exactly what you’ve signed up for. Light easy reading with a dreamy happily ever after. Well written, very well executed.

Highlights:

  • Loved the written descriptions of how computers worked. Just lol
  • Good friendships and supportive families
  • Garwood focused on how -both- characters were, not just the leading man.

Lowlights:

  • It’s a 2000s mainstream mystery romance. It’s not going to be complicated, it’s not going to be deep and it is going to be a little formulaic.
  • One characters dislike of age gap couples didn’t add much to the plot but was frequently mentioned.
