The Bromance Book Club – Lyssa Kay Adams | Book Review

This book was recommended to me, so I didn’t read the blurb. Going in to books absolutely blind is one of my favourite things to do, especially when it turns out the book is amazing! Bromance Book Club nailed it. The perspective was fresh, the tone was healthy, and it really showed the strength of a good community.

I’ve always been afraid that one day I’ll way up and realize I’m not where I want to be. That was handled really well in this novel, with both main characters being true to themselves at the end. Taking down the wall was a really good parallel and struck me hard. The way the marriage fell apart didn’t feel dramatized or insignificant, it felt like a story I might have heard from a friend’s experience. One small thing after another, one secret kept for too long that grows out of proportion, partners taking each other for granted, and then the straw that broke the camels back and kaboom.

The group of men helping Gavin level up his emotional intelligence was SO NICE to read about. Instead of toxic “alphas” who can’t verbalize anything at all, Gavin, while skeptical at first, dived wholeheartedly into trying a new approach. The sports bro vibe was definitely active through the book, but these men were never portrayed as dumb lugs or all brawn. I loved seeing healthy friendships, a quality support system, and complex characters.

Bromance Book Club was very well written, handling complex issues deftly. While the book was hilarious, light and fluffy, the style didn’t prevent it from really diving deep into relationships, insecurities and the meaning of powerful relationships. Looking forward to getting my hands on book 2!
